The author, Marcia Wilson -
Cales, grew up along the Gravel
Girty Line of the C&O railroad.
Late in life, she is grateful that
TV reception was non-existent
in their river valley; it got her
outdoors to the river she loved.
She works as an Americorps
*VISTA for the Greenbrier River,
the longest untamed river in the
East, and one of the most
endangered cave ecosystems
of the world.
Her job permits her to educate
the public on the values of clean
water and caves...but she does
not get to go underground as
often as she'd like. It does,
however, let her meet the most
interesting people.
All the stories in this book
began on the river banks of the
Greenbrier, whether by a mood,
an incidence, or the sound of
someone's voice. It is still one
of the few forces that can pull
her nose out of a book.
