SPINDLINGS:
Design your own Prayerbeads.
One way to keep prayers
constantly part of your life is to
make and use prayer beads. My
first set were painted every color
imaginable and had couplets for
each bead, having to do with
thankfulness in many areas. My
next set contained only 24 beads
and a Thor’s hammer – these
were used for runic meditations.
Next came a set of 120,
incorporating the runes, several
sets of twelve affirmations
concerning the Handmaidens and
interspersed with Nine beads, in
three colors on which I offered
this:

In all Mother I am wise,
In all Mother I hone magic
In all Mother I thrive

In all Mother I am wise,
In all Mother I hone magic
In all Mother I thrive

In all Mother I am wise,
In all Mother I hone magic
In all Mother I thrive

If you choose to make
prayerbeads for All-Mother and
the Handmaidens, you might want
to incorporate this from the Prose
Edda:

On the large bead:
The Foremost is Frigg, From
Fensalir hails

Twelve smaller beads:
The Second from Sokkvabekk,
Saga shares mead

Third, of physicians, Eir is the best

Fourth is Gefjon, Virgin mother of
sons

The Fifth carries FriggaÂ’s box,
Fulla is her name

Sixth, we honor Sjofn, though her
number is seven

Gentle Lofn, for love,  permission
she wins

Var hears our whispers, upholds
them in Troth

Vor is aware, in her we may know

Syn guards the door and refutes
all offenses

Hlin  is our refuge, consoler, and
defender

Snotra teaches self-control, wise
in Frith-making

Gna fares forth, mighty messenger
of Frigga

CREATING A MOTHER
CANDLE

Create a candle for Frigga and
the Handmaidens. This is great to
do as a group, especially if you
opt to do the walk mentioned
below. Into it will go the essences
of herbs and woods and other
substances which embody the
attribute of each.  At present, I've
graced a storebought candle with
oil in which these are infused, but
a homemade candle with all of
this within it would be a good idea
as well. Infuse these herbs in oil
(sunflower would be good as
Goddess is sun energy in the
Northern way) and add a bit to
your candle wax after you've
taken it from the heat or as you
set the wick.

Birch for Syn,
Wheat for Fulla
Yarrow and dandelion for Gna
Rosemary (can use Caraway) for
Var
Chicory (used in unlock spells)
for Lofn
Apple leaf (or apple wood) for Eir
Rose (or red clover) for Sjofn
Nettle (or Thistle) for Hlin
Honey for Saga
Alfalfa for Gefion
Lavender for Snotra
Mugwort for Vor
Motherwort for Frigga

One of the best ways to choose
which herbs to use in your candle
might be to go on intuition rather
than magical correspondences.
Create your circle, ask guidance,
draw the energy in to center and
take a walk. Stay open for each
Handmaiden to suggest her herb
to you. In this way, you are not
heading down to the magic store
to buy anything, you are doing
more of what your ancestors did
-- you are using what come
natural.
As I walked to gather part of
these herbs, I breathed in the
green "tea" formed of rain-soaked
ground hit by the sun. All my old
herb friends were up and growing
and sending their scents around
me. I saw yarrow, coltsfoot,
queen of the meadow, yellow
dock, burdock, plantain, grape,
blackberry brier, multiflora rose,
pine, birch, maple, oak, poplar,
hazel, rhododendren, willow,
violet, mustard greens, dandelion,
clover, mayapple... Among these
are many suggestions for use in
creating a candle to use for the
Handmaidens and Frigga. As for
the oil, why not melt a bit of
beeswax or tallow and stir the
dried and powdered herbs into it.
As with all things, follow the Inner
Teacher and you won't go wrong.
